Shift Happens
A Novel of Awakenings

Two gay men navigate some unexpected trials in their fledgling relationship when one of them takes off on an extraterrestrial contact experience.

After Andy Gage disappears from his San Francisco flat in the early hours of a June morning in 1995, his lover of three months, Richard Lang, is frantic to find him. When his search takes him to the slopes of Mount Shasta ten hours later, the couples’ mind-boggling metaphysical, multi-dimensional adventure together is only beginning.
Andy was an outrageous and outraged gay man in his late thirties who had fled his Midwestern upbringing in Indiana and gay life in Chicago to start over in San Francisco. Andy knew there was more to All There Is than this three dimensional reality we live in. He knew was an empath, too often in synch with and in tune to the feelings of others. And because of it, he had difficulty recognizing and trusting his own feelings.

He had lost a lover to AIDS. And though still HIV negative himself, he was resisting Love in the form of the ardent advances of Richard Lang. He knew the only happy endings were in the classic movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age that he loved and into which he escaped as often as possible. He didn’t suspect that he had a few wake up calls coming

The story of Andy’s awakenings takes place in 1995 San Francisco, it could have taken place yesterday, it could have happened in any other place or time, but it didn’t.

“Marooned on Margo” Issue One @

Margo is not a woman. Margo is a planet. Marooned on Margo is the title of an unfinished novel that Jerry Thomas Boyd began in 1985. It was to be a satirical look at our own planet through the adventures of the sincere and naïve, Paul Richman, a young gay man desperate to find love and acceptance and to understand his place in the Universe, while continually being buffeted by the perverse nature of the reality he encountered, both on Earth and on Margo.

The story begins in the summer of 1979. While vacationing in Provincetown, Paul is kidnapped and taken to Margo as the the ‘pet’ of the scoundrel, Clawd Reemz. The book was meant to be a tale of the survival of an innocent fugitive, adrift in a hostile and alien culture, marooned on an alien planet.

After extensive plotting and a beginning chapter, Jerry felt that he was unable to complete the novel. Now this new version will be published in  a large format, full color edition of four successive issues. As if in a scrapbook, each issue will include samplings of the background work, both text and illustrations, which created the geophysical and cultural landscape of Margo. You’ll also find a guide to the planet as written by the novel’s protagonist, and a short story in four parts starring a few of the characters who were intended to be in the novel-that-never-was begins in Issue One. And there is to be new art and collages to further reveal the many moods of Margo. Whether in a galaxy far, far away, a parallel Universe, or in the pages of this book, now you too may become … Marooned on Margo.
